From 12 May to 9 June 1999 I was fortunate to tour the Brazilian States of Bahia and Minas Gerais with Marlon Machado, Keith Grantham and Brian Bates.  In Diamantina we teamed up with Rudolf Schulz who with Marlon Machado were researching the genus Uebelmannia.

The images shown here are blatant self indulgence - a selection of pictures that show us enjoying ourselves in a beautiful country in search of some fascinating cacti.

The infamous mule ride
Near Sito in Minas Gerais we searched for Uebelmannia pefctinifera 'horrida'.  We asked the way at a farm and were promptly offered to be taken to a hillside location by horse.  As the Europeans in the party had at most experienced a seaside donkey ride, we followed on foot, but at a river crossing were peruaded to mount the mule.  My spectacular mounting of the steed (top picture) was followed on the otherside of the river by an orthodox dismount - face first into the mud.   Fortunately Brian Bates was laughing so much that he forgot to take a picture.   Left: Keith 'John Wayne' Grantham takes it steady.
